Swollen Feet During Pregnancy (Edema)

With increasing gestational age, a lot of physical changes that pregnant women are facing. Mother was pregnant often experience swelling of the legs is called edema. Approximately 75% of pregnant women experience this complaint in the third trimester.
Edema or swelling of the legs during pregnancy due to increased blood volume during pregnancy and the pressure of growing uterus, mild leg edema often occurs during pregnancy. However, serious complications of pregnancy such as deep vein thrombosis and preeclampsia can also cause edema.
There are several things that can trigger the occurrence of edema, including: Stand up for too long, the excess intake of sodium (salt), too much caffeine, potassium deficiency and lack of drinking water.

Actual swelling of the legs during pregnancy is a normal condition, but this condition often complain of pregnant women for disturbing activity and appearance. So what measures can be done to resolve edema pregnant?

1. Rest your feet with the Mother of a higher position.
2. Apply a good diet, such as multiply the consumption of vegetables, fruits and drink plenty of (at least 6-8 glasses a day).
3. Consumption of foods that contain lots of protein
4. Reduce consumption of caffeine and salty foods.
5. Do not fold or cross their legs when sitting.
6. Wear comfortable shoes, do not use a high-heeled shoes.
7. Use a loose-fitting clothing, avoid wearing tight clothing, so as not to impede circulation and increase fluid retention.

Mild edema commonly experienced in pregnancy, especially in the feet and hands area. But Mother need to be vigilant when edema has occurred in the face, legs and eyelids, is also accompanied by headache. Mother immediately consult a doctor because it could be a symptom of pre-eclampsia.
