Can nutrition prevent prostate cancer? This is probably a question that is often asked by patients when they are diagnosed with prostate cancer.
There is no proven prevention strategy for prostate cancer. But you can reduce the risk of prostate cancer by making healthy choices like exercising and eating healthy foods.
Choose healthy eating
There is some evidence that low-fat foods and full of fruits and vegetables may contribute to lower risk of prostate cancer, although they have not been proven to be strong.
If you want to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, consider trying:
- Low-fat diets
Foods containing fat include meat, nuts, oils and dairy products such as milk and cheese.
In some studies, men who take high amounts of fat each day are at an increased risk of prostate cancer. Although there is no evidence that excess fat causes prostate cancer, reducing the amount of fat intake every day also has other benefits like helping to control your weight and heart.
To reduce daily fat intake, limit fat foods or choose low-fat foods. For example, reduce the amount of extra fat in the food during cooking, choose thinly cut meat and low dairy or fat dairy products.
- Eat more plant fats than animal fat
In studies that see fat intake and risk of prostate cancer, fat from animals is likely to be associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Animal products containing fat include meat, pork fat and butter.
You might consider using plant-based fat instead of animal fat. For example, cooking using olive oil instead of butter. Sprinkle nuts or ore in your salad instead of cheese.
- Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and nutrients are thought to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, although research does not prove that certain nutrients are guaranteed to reduce the risk.
Eating more fruits and vegetables also tends to make you reduce your intake of other foods like high-fat foods.
You may consider increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables daily by adding additional dishes or vegetables for each meal. Consider eating fruits and vegetables as a snack.
- Eat fish
Fatty fish such as salmon and tuna contain omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fatty acid that is associated with a decrease in the risk of prostate cancer. If you do not eat fish, you may consider putting it in your diet.
- Reduce daily dairy products
In the study, men who eat the most milk products like milk, cheese, and yogurt every day have a risk of prostate cancer. But the results of the study have been mixed, and the risks associated with dairy products are considered small.
Maintaining healthy weight
Obese men with body mass index (BMI) 30 or higher may have the risk of prostate cancer. If you are overweight or obese, try to lose weight. You can do this by reducing the daily intake of calories and increasing the amount of exercise.
If you have a healthy weight, try to maintain it by exercising and choose a healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and seeds.
- Exercise
Studies on exercise and prostate cancer risk mostly show that men exercising may have less risk of prostate cancer.
Exercise has many other health benefits and can reduce the risk of heart disease and other cancers. Exercise can also help you maintain weight or help you lose weight.
If you do not work out, make an appointment with your doctor to make sure you're safe. When you start exercising, make it slowly. Add your daily physical activity by placing your car farther from where you go and trying to use the ladder instead of the lift.
